Colonic Hydrotherapy
Colonic Hydrotherapy or Colonic Irrigation, has been recognised as a natural therapy since ancient Egypt, Greece and India. It has been used in the Western World since the 1800’s. Colonic Hydrotherapists believe that toxins that become built up in the bowel may be responsible for many health challenges and problems making their ultimate goal being to eliminate them from the colon. Treatments are usually delivered in a health clinic or spa with sessions lasting between 30 to 50 minutes. Colonic Hydrotherapists should be qualified from a reputable training provider.

Why should I be concerned about my colon?
The colon's main function is the formation and elimination of body waste. We experience health and well-being when the colon is clean and has a normal function. When the colon is sluggish the body wastes accumulate and degrees of constipation results. When the colon becomes constipated, generally it is packed or lined with accumulated, hardened faeces lodged in the pockets of the colon walls. This hardened matter then obstructs the muscular contractions, known as peristalsis, and more faeces build up along the walls resulting in the colon's inability to properly evacuate. The waste of many months or even years can actually result in 5, 10 and sometimes more than 15 kgs of weight causing a distended and abnormally shaped colon. The clogged colon then interferes with the final absorption and digestion of food, depriving the body of necessary nutrients. This results in fermentation and putrefaction of undigested food, which creates toxins (poisons). These toxins are reabsorbed into the bloodstream and carried to every part of the body causing that tired and listless feeling; the brain and nervous system can become depressed and irritable; the toxins can create skin problems and a pale complexion; and joints can become stiff and painful.

How will colonics benefit the colon?
Colonic Hydrotherapy is not a cure, but it is a valuable procedure and treatment for a variety of different colon conditions.

1. Colonics cleanse and rejuvenate the colon. They help to remove stagnant faecal matter, thus eliminating bacteria, toxins, gas, mucus, parasites, and cellular debris which allows the colon to perform its natural function of absorption and elimination more effectively. Toxic material is broken down so it can no longer harm your body or inhibit assimilation and elimination. Once impacted material is removed your colon can begin to function as it was meant to.

2. Colonics exercise and improve colon muscle tone. The build up of toxic debris weakens the colon and impairs its function. The gentle filling and emptying of the colon facilitates peristaltic movement in the colon, which is extremely beneficial to the sluggish colon.

3. Colonics reshape the colon. When problem conditions exist in the colon, they tend to alter the shape, which in turn causes more problems. The gentle action of the water moving in and out, coupled with abdominal massage by the Colonic Hydrotherapist, helps to move the waste out of the colon. This process enables the colon to resume its natural shape.

4. Colonics stimulate the reflex points on the colon. Every system and organ of the body is connected to the colon by reflex points. A colonic treatment stimulates these points, thereby affecting the corresponding body points in a beneficial way.

Colonics stimulate the liver, kidneys and Lymph systems assisting them in releasing toxins.

Why do people receive Colonic Hydrotherapy?
Athletes use colonic hydrotherapy to improve metabolic efficiency. Many receive the treatments during a period of life-style change or as a preventive measure. Another group manifests symptoms of intestinal distress;

• Constipation (some from prescription drugs)
• Diarrhoea
• Bloating/discomfort after eating/smelly gas
• Haemorrhoids
• Indigestion
• IBS
• Diverticulitis
• Colitis
• Skin conditions such as psoriasis, shingles, and eczema
• Scar tissue and adhesions from surgery.
• Low back pain
• Allergies
• Cravings
• Candida overgrowth
• Removal of toxic material: Bacteria, Heavy Metal, Mucus, Undigested Food Fermented and Putrefaction
• Inability to loose weight
• Some people actually achieve or maintain weight loss with regular Colon hydrotherapy.
• Abnormal body odour
• Coated tongue/unpleasant breath
• Eating disorders
• Pot belly (sagging posture)
• Frequent headaches/poor concentration/memory
• Stiffness in joints
• Loss of energy/fatigue
• Some come in during a fast, a cleansing program, a raw food diet, a liver and/or gallbladder flush, or recovering from an accident.
• Another group is pain motivated; abdominal pain, continuous headaches and migraines, back or shoulder pain, aching joints, gout. Some clients are immune compromised with lupus, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis, cancer, chronic fatigue, Candida, infections, colds or influenza.
• Many doctors are using Colonic Hydrotherapy for pre and post-surgery, barium x-ray and colonoscopy.
• Some are working on emotional issues which they feel are physiologically rooted in their intestines.
• Health care referral
• Knew someone who had colon cancer or other health problems

Does a colonic hurt?
Colonics are usually painless. In fact many people report their colonic hydrotherapy sessions as being both refreshing and relaxing. However some discomfort may be experience due to constipation, some form of obstruction, excess flatulence (gases) and occasional cramping from the release of faecal matter or toxins.

How many colonic sessions does one need?
The number of colonic sessions desired will depend on the individual needs of the client. Every person's goals will differ. Just as some people exercise on a daily or weekly basis to tone and tighten their outer body; some people follow an ongoing cleansing, toning and rebuilding regime for the inner body. Many of us have five or more kilos of impacted faeces in our colon. Often the waste is so hard and well lodged in the colon that it may take a series of colonics to sufficiently soften and loosen it. Initially, 3 to 12 sessions are recommended especially if you have never had a complete colon cleanse. The number is affected by how a person responds to the first few sessions. Age, previous dietary and exercise patterns, activities and emotional state are all factors.

Once you have done a complete colon cleanse, the rule of thumb is once every 4-6 weeks, then a series of 2-3 every change in seasons. Someone coming in for a regular preventative maintenance would obviously need far fewer sessions than someone with severe gastro-intestinal problems.

Who performs colonic hydrotherapy?
Our professional registered therapists are committed to set the standard in the field of colonic hydrotherapy. Clinic Indulge is a modern, state of the art facility. Our client satisfaction is our number one priority. The atmosphere is comfortable, relaxing and highly sanitary. Your professional therapist is there to help you be as relaxed and comfortable as possible.

What is the procedure for the colonic session?
In short, it is a relaxing, gentle experience. We begin with a health consultation getting a perspective on your health history and setting some goals for good health outcomes in the future. Filtered, temperature-regulated water is introduced into the colon through a pencil thin plastic disposable tube. After the waste material of the colon is softened and loosened, it is evacuated through the Colonic Hydrotherapy System. We use a superior "open system". There is no offensive smell or mess to worry about. The treatment usually lasts approx 30 - 45 minutes. Your modesty is protected throughout the process.

Clients are required to remove their lower clothing and may choose to change into some alternative clothing before the procedure begins. During the treatment, they lay on a specialised colonic hydrotherapy system that allows the colon to be filled with warm purified water. Herbs or enzymes are able to be added to the water for specialised colonic treatments. The water causes the muscles lining the colon to contract and expand forcing out faecal matter, which often includes bacteria and undigested food. The Colonic Hydrotherapist may massage the abdomen or administer reflexology to the feet to help loosen pockets of waste and gas. The procedure may be repeated several times and should be relatively pain free.

Prior to the colonic hydrotherapy treatment and once it has been completed, it is recommended that the client eats light meals for up to two days. Some Colonic Hydrotherapists recommend 1-2 colonic hydrotherapy sessions whilst others will suggest treatments more regularly every few months, seasonally or as per lifestyle challenges.

Colonic Hydrotherapy may assist general body detoxification and secondary conditions as a result of poor bowel function, such as: skin problems, bloating and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Colonic Hydrotherapy is not suitable for people suffering from many inflammatory diseases such as: Crohns disease, Diverticulitis, Ulcerative Colitis or Haemorrhoids. If there is any doubt whatsoever then medical advice should be sought before commencing treatments.

The colon, or large intestine / bowel, is an extremely important organ situated at the end of the digestive tract in the abdominal cavity. It is divided into several regions: the appendix (thought to be a vestigial structure, but with rich lymphatic supply), the ascending, the transverse, the descending the sigmoid colon and the rectum. The anus acts as a valve under voluntary control.

Its functions are to re-absorb digestive juices, water-soluble salts and bile back into the bloodstream and thence to the liver, to store and desiccate food and other bodily wastes prior to elimination, and to house a vast array of beneficial bacteria. The latter help our immunity to fight infection, keep high blood cholesterol levels in check, produce a number of vitamins, and probably also act in preventing diseases of the colon.

The form of the colon is variable: most diagrams show an idealised bowel, whereas the length is variable (between about 1 to 3.5 metres), and the path it follows can be tortuous, with many loops. For some unfortunate people, where constipation runs in their family, it is likely that they have inherited long bowels making transit time long and slow, colonic hydrotherapy may be able to assist with this.

The bowel structure is made from smooth muscle which is different to ordinary body muscle inasmuch as it is under autonomic (or automatic) nerve regulation over which we have no conscious control. When the bowel is working normally, it is expected that the bowel will partially empty (during defecation) at least once every 24 hours. If long or slow, the transit time is increased and constipation occurs. If fast and disordered, muscle spasm may result which is a feature of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, strangely also accompanied by constipation together with bloating, irregular defecation and incomplete evacuation.

The colon is the main part of the eliminative system of the body, where wastes are excreted from the alimentary tract, the lymphatic system and the bloodstream. It is important to keep bowel function regular to prevent the other eliminative organs becoming overworked, and to avoid the effect of toxins building up in the body.

Did you know?
• The ideal bowel transit time is less than 24 hours.
• In adulthood, all our vitamin K needs are provided by our own bowel bacteria.
• There are more bacteria present in the colon than there are cells that make up our own body.

The repercussions of poor bowel function may be seen throughout the body in a wide range of health problems.

Colonic Hydrotherapy has become a fast growing profession in supporting many health conditions naturally and effectively. Colonic Hydrotherapy aids in the removal of accumulated waste and toxins in the large intestine. It is a gentle, safe and valuable procedure used to assist the body in restoring and sustaining vibrant health.
